The Value of the Standard...

• The actual block named the"Standard Unit" is a piece measuring 5 1/2" Long by 2 3/4" Wide by 1 3/8" in Height. All Standard Unit dimensions are multiples of 1 3/8" and the dimensions of all other block shapes are multiples or fractions of the the dimensions of the "Standard Unit".
• Children, while engaged in the creative freedom of block play, are introduced to and "absorb" math concepts such as length, width, height and volume and the concept of fractions.
• Through play activities, children "discover" the relationship between the different block shapes and learn while playing and creating that two half units make a "unit", two units make a "double unit" etc..

  Don't be Fooled...

• It is important to be aware that many block sets available today are called "Unit" blocks but do not meet the physical characteristics or the dimensional requirements of that designation.
• Blocks of this type should not be integrated with true Unit Blocks. If the "Standard" is not used, blocks become randomly sized pieces of wood with no relationship from one to the other and much of the educational value of the block play is lost.
